The problem it fixed was a call bug where sometimes when there was an incoming call, pressing the answer key would result in the entire phone freezing up and the call would remain unanswered. I am yet to face that problem since I upgraded to the new firmware.
Even worse some networks don't bother at all. O2 UK usually falls into the slow category with updates often appearing 6 months later. More recently they don't appear to be bothering at all which has changed my opinion of O2 to be quite negative. I wouldn't waste your time by contacting O2 on the phone as you will get the stock answer from the script readers: "it's the manufacturers fault".
Posting on O2's customer forum may help but don't hold your breath. Thanks Psycho, As they say, you learn something new every day. I suppose there is no workaround to this? Thanks again. The only legal workaround is to get written permission from O2 to allow your phone to be debranded.
With this permission you can take your phone to a nokia care point and they will replace the O2 product code and firmware with a standard nokia product code and firmware. Without permission they are not allowed to do it. You need to convince O2 that the new firmware fixes issues that you are having. Make sure you take it to a higher level than the script readers to stand any chance whatsoever.

After the install, i can report the following: 1. All bookmarks disappeared from the browser, this has not been the case previously. If nokia developers read this, please fix it, it is seriously painful to restore all internet bookmarks manually. Web feeds are preserved however. In the internet browser, all pages saved in the "saved pages" folder are gone.
Many but strangely not all applications must be reinstalled. This issue has been around for a while. One example of such programs is Opera mobile including all its bookmarks of couse.
None of the preloaded nokia bookmarks can be deleted. This has been around for a while, but it is till annoying that the bookmarks and folders cannot be removed. So the choice is yours to make. I'm about to upgrade my E51 to this new firmware as we speak.
