Open Windows Explorer. In the left navigation pane, click Computer or This PC. Near the top-right of Windows Explorer, click in the Search field and enter part or all the file name you want to find. Select the app you wish to use, check the box for Always open with, and then click Open. Alternatively, right-click on the file and select Get Info.
Click the down arrow for Open with, click the drop-down menu to choose the default app, and then click Change All to always associate that file type with your chosen app. It will be different in each browser but basically in settings. Option 3.

Wait for the process to finish. Hi I have trouble opening programs on my computer because I deleted registry files to get a virus off my pc. Everytime I try to open a program it says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association control panel". I tried to do as said above but it does not work. It will only let me change the file. Any help would be appreciated. The tip to add an association via browsing for the program you wish to be associated with the file type and ticking the box that states "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file", does not work for me, io's still unassociated.
I also tried to sue the angelfire software but there I could not figure out how to associate the unassociated. Still looking for a solution if anyone has one! Choose the extension and pick Internet Explorer as the default program. Clearly it is a bit more than that but it worked for me. Thank you!! I accidentally set. I had a similar problem where the program I wanted to associate with a file type would not show up in the dialogue box of options.
Once the path was corrected the program was available to select. Using unassoc application I clicked the "file association user " on a particular file type I want to unassociate. Now the button is grayed out and the association is still not removed. Short of deleting the file type, I have no idea what to do next. Deleted the prog. Joseph : I have the same issue of accidentally associating. Saw your reply about something working but had no way to see who you were thanking and what the solution was.

Another option I've seen is to create a fake file extension, associate them with that file, then delete the only existence of that file But try the registry thing above if you haven't already first Sounds more feasible!
I wasn't deleting all the various keys it was using in both locations. Restarted explorer re-created my file and it now shows as a control. The same is also true if the file extension has additionally been placed in the Explorer FileExts list.
This solution might sound a little odd but it does actually work. What you do is associate the file extension with a program that is subsequently removed from the system. The result is the file extension has no valid association because the program that is supposed to open it is no longer available. Optionally rename the file to something unique but do not change its extension from. The file can be any executable such as a program installer, portable utility, or a copied system file like Regedit.
From there, browse for the executable. Windows 7 users: Click Open with or if there is a sub menu, click on Choose default program. Press the Browse button and locate the file created in the previous step.
